Draft Recap 2009

You asked for it, you've got it!

Here's the Draft Recap for the 2009 Draft. Comment below if you hate what I say, because I know you do!

Round 1

Best – Matt Forte, San Dimas High (Graham - Auto): He led the Bears in receptions last year. Oh, and rushing yards. Oh, and TDs. With Cutler in the backfield now, they can’t stack the box against the run. Forte is set for a huge season – especially with 0.5 points per catch.

Worst – Brandon Jacobs, Evil Universe All Stars (Dave): He played out of his gourd last year. With Eli and Plaxico stretching the defense, Jacobs ran over his opponents. In 2009, however, the passing game is in shambles allowing the defense to concentrate on the run. Jacobs has hands of stone too – 6 catches all of last year. He’ll return to earth, guaranteed.

Round 2

Best – Calvin Johnson, Pumpkin Spice Lattes (Dufresne): I was tempted to say Steve Slaton here, but getting who some are calling the number 1 wide receiver in a 0.5 PPR league at Round 2 is too good to pass up. He was superb last year when the QB merry go round was spinning of f the tracks. What can he do this year with a #1 pick tossing the pigskin?

Worst – Terrell Owens, Puddin’ Pops (Steph): I’m going to repeat this stat that I’ve heard on ESPN a few times now. Only 6 wide receivers in NFL history have had a 1000 yard season when they were over the age of 35. Three of them were Jerry Rice. And none of them had Trent Edwards throwing to them…Oh, and his toe injury can’t help the situation.

Round 3

Best - Jason Whitten, Foam John Thomas (Rob): Another TO related stat – After he left San Francisco and Philly, the TE (Eric Johnson, LJ Smith) was the biggest recipient of his vacated targets. In other words, Whitten was great last year, but in TO’s absence, he’ll be brilliant. 3rd round was a bit of a stretch though.

Worst – Pierre Thomas, Moose is Loose! (Brian): It looks like the minor injury is more than just minor. He’s going to be held out of the first game and could be out longer. The establishment was touting Thomas as a breakout back this year. Now it all depends on his health. Not so good for a 3rd round pick and your #1 RB.

Round 4 –

Best – Tony Gonzalez, AC Slaters (Andy C.): When compared to the Average Draft Position, we nailed this round. Pretty much everyone went where they were expected. This is why I like the TG pick, as AC has gotten ahead of the TE rush. Plus, with the Falcons as a break out passing team, this pick could be a game breaker.

Worst – Derrick Ward, San Dimas High (Graham): Poor Autodraft, he did it again. With late breaking news that Cadallac Williams and Ernest Graham will be splitting the carries with Ward, his value plummets and the Autodraft hadn’t been adjusted. Derrick Ward could be better when Cadillac and Ernest remember that they are Cadillac and Ernest.

Round 5 –

Best – Jay Cutler, Team Klenk (Paul): Okay, I might be a homer here, but I think the demise of Cutler is greatly exaggerated. He looks like he hasn’t missed a step in the preseason and Chicago is up in arms for a top flight QB.

Worse – Lee Evens, Evil Universe All Stars (Dave): With all the TO bashing, he’s still going to be the #1 WR in Buffalo. Whatever value Evans had last year has evaporated in 2009. Berrian, who went two picks later is a much better option at WR here.

Round 6 –

Best – Santonio Holmes, Moose is Loose! (Brian): Even without prior knowledge of his breakout game on Thursday, the Superbowl hero has steadily improved over his 4 years in the league. Hines Ward is aging and Roethlisberger is peaking. I think he’ll have a top notch year and run with the #1 WRs.

Worst – Fred Taylor, Puddin’ Pops (Steph): Fragile Freddie does it again. He gets picked way too high, especially since he’s part of a 5 head monster in New England. Are there going to be enough touches to go around with Brady running the offense? Will he stay healthy long enough to get a single touch?

Round 7 –

Best – Donald Driver, Puddin’ Pops (Steph): Aaron Rodgers is going to be a monster this year and Greg Jennings can only catch so many balls. Driver has been money in the bank every year and his age shouldn’t matter this year.

Worst – Earnest Graham, Team Klenk (Paul): Yes, we are running through the dregs of the running backs, but Earnest Graham is the third RB on a questionable offense. If Ward or Cadillac gets hurt, then he may have some value, but I think Byron Leftwich has something to say about that…In other words, they are BAD.

Round 8 –

Best – Felix Jones, Angry Al Yankovic (October): No one remembers how Dallas used Jones prior to his season ending injury. Even after Jones was out, their other backup RB (Tashard Choice) was spectacular. Dallas is going to rest Marion Barber to keep him healthy, and Romo will be looking short to replace TO’s targets. Jones will be there to gobble up the touches.

Worst – Kellen Winslow, Johnny Chimpos (Tracy): Maybe Tracy loves Kellen’s “We’re going to WAR” attitude about the NFL, but recently Winslow has been all talk and no action. Especially with the ongoing QB questions in Cleveland, he won’t have time to develop any rapport with his play caller. Oh, and his ACL will blow up by halftime.

Round 9 –

Best – David Garrard, Team Klenk (Paul): In round 9, we’re looking for upside. If you look at his stats from last year, Garrard was a top 12 QB and he should improve this year. With MJD running on all cylinders and an healthy offensive line, this QB is poised for a breakout season with top 7-8 potential.

Worst – Willis McGahee, Puddin’ Pops (Steph): I think Steph must have used her notes from the 2006 draft. Her team would have been spectacular. In 2009 however… McGahee is a shell of his shell of his former self. Ray Rice and McLain should get the bulk of the carries.

Round 10 –

Best – Visanthe Shiancoe, Fear the Hoodie (Dagan): The number 7 tight end last year has a new QB who can’t throw down the field anymore. Yes, we’re talking Farve, not Tavaris Jackson – the TE should get some touches this year.

Worst – Stephen Gostkowski, Angry Al Yankovic (October): Way too early for a kicker. That is all.

Round 11 –

Best – Leon Washington, San Dimas High (Graham): Well, I can say this – Autodraft is a finicky drafter. He’s either on top of his game, or he drafts rounds too early. Washington is one play away from being a top 10 RB this year. Thomas Jones is old and brittle, and the Jets are going to run with Sanchez as the starting QB. His receptions won’t hurt his value in this league either.

Worst – Jason Elam, AC Slaters (Andy C.): Again, way too early. Kicker is so unpredictable year to year that it’s hardly possible to pick a top 10 kicker, much less which kicker is going to be in the top 2.

Round 12 –

Best – Justin Gage, Angry Al Yankovic (October): As we saw last Thursday, Gage has a connection with Kerry Collins – and not just this year either. With Nate Washington hurt, Gage will be the primary target on this under-rated offense.

Worst – Brandon Stokley, Fear the Hoodie (Dagan): The third WR on the Broncos is almost completely useless. Royal and Marshall will get all the targets, and they will run the rest of the time. There was a reason that Orton was allowed to leave from Chicago – and it wasn’t his over the top passing game.

Round 13 –

Best – Cadillac Williams, Puddin’ Pops (Steph): Well, he’s the starter and if you can get a starting RB this late in the game you have to pick him. He’ll be hurt by Week 3, but 3 weeks of a starter in Round 13…

Worst – Michael Crabtree, R-Squad Sacapuntas (Brent): There are many more WRs out there with better upside that have actually signed with their teams. You can thank Eugene Parker (his agent) for that…

Round 14 –

Best – Earl Bennett, Team Klenk (Paul): Bennett was Cutler’s star receiver back in college. The two of them have hooked up time and time again in the pre-season. I
think this is Bennett’s breakout year.

Worst – T.J. Duckett, Pumpkin Spice Lattes (Dufresne): Drafting a running back that’s not on a roster – that’s gutsy. And a bad draft choice…

Round 15 –

Best – Chris Brown, Team Klenk (Paul): Chris Brown is slated to take away the goal line carries from Steve Slaton. If he’s healthy, which is a big IF, he can be a great flex or off week play. The Texan’s offense looks good this year.

Worst – Dominic Rhodes, Evil Universe All Stars (Dave): If the Bills cut you, you are the worst pick in the round. Hands down.

Round 16 –

Best – Brady Quinn, San Dimas High (Graham): You are going on upside alone in this round, and getting the starting QB in Cleveland is a great steal here. He may play up to his potential in the first few weeks, or you can just drop him for a week one breakout.

Worst – Marc Bulger, Puddin’ Pops (Steph): With that being said, Marc Bulger has no upside. His WR core relies on Donnie Avery, and Steven Jackson is one play away from blowing out his knee again.

Round 17 –

Best – Kerry Collins, Team Gridiron Ninjas (Jen): See Round 16, worst pick. Now think the opposite. No one remembers Collins as the steady QB of last year’s playoff team.

Worst – Kevin Jones, Angry Al Yankovic (October): Drafting a player who’s out for the year is a fitting way to end the draft for 2009. Excellent pick, October.

I definitely had a better draft when not present for it than when I am...
